An Introduction to Mewar Region
Mewar or Mewad is a region in the south-central part of Rajasthan state of India. It includes the present-day districts of Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Pratapgarh, Rajasamand, Udaipur, Banswara, Dungarpur and Pirawa Tehsil of Jhalawar District of Rajasthan, Neemuch and Mandsaur districts of Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Gujarat. For centuries, the region was ruled by Rajputs. The princely state of Udaipur emerged as an administrative unit during the period of Mughals and British Eas India Company governance in India and remained until the end of the British Raj era.
The Mewar region lies between the Aravali Ranges to the northwest, Ajmer to the north, Gujarat and the Vagad region of Rajasthan to the south, the Malwa regoion of Madhya Pradesh State to the southeast and the Hadoti region of Rajasthan to the east. This region is famous for its bravity, so many kings (Maharanas) rulled this region. The first famous King of Mewar was Bappa Rawal 8th Century who established the Mewar State and also won the Chittorgarh from Mlechchhas. After Bappa Rawal, the other famous rulers of Mewar State were Maharana Ratan Singh, Maharana Kumbha, Maharana Udai Singh, Maharana Pratap, Manara Shakti Singh, Maharana Amar Singh.
