Story behind Shri Khatu Shyam Ji:-
Khatushyamji or Khatu is a village of religious importance in Sikar District of Rajasthan in India. It is home to a famous temple of Shri Khatushyam Ji. It is one of the most sacred temples in India. The original temple was built in 1027 AD by Roopsingh Chauhan, after his wife Narmada Kanwar, saw dream about the buried idol. The place where the idol was dug out from is called Shyam Kund. In 1720 AD, a nobleman known as Diwan Abhaisingh renovated the old temple, at the behest of the then ruler of Marwar.
The story is said that, Barbareeka (Khatu) was originally a yaksha, son of Ghatotkacha and grand son of Bhima and Hidimba, Barbareeka was living with his grand mother Hidimba and obey the order of his grant mother only, When Bettle of Mahabharata was going on between Kauravas and Pandavas, Hidimba was very uneasy and haviang fear of defeat of Pandavas, so she ordered her grand son to go for the bettle and to support the weeken party i.e. Pandavas according to her. But on the ohter side the scene was changes and Pandavas were winning the bettle. As Barbareeka started for the bettle field, on the way Lord Krishna stopped him to check his ablity to change the scene of bettle. In this process, Lord Krishna asked Barbareeka's head, which he (Barbareeka) gave to Lord Krishna.
On this lord Krishna blessed Barbareeka that he will be worshipped in the Modern Times and his Name will come first before Lord Krishna's Name. So Barbareeka (Khatu) is worshipped as Khatu Shyam Ji.
